Choosing a denim bag for someone? I’d start with her sort of denim, what she carries and the little details she likes. Here are a few things I’d look at when picking a bag as a gift.
Why Give a Denim Bag as a Gift?
You know when you see something and immediately think of someone? A colour they always wear, a detail they’d love, a bag that just looks like them.
That’s where I’d start when choosing a denim bag as a gift. With the person. The birthday, anniversary or thank-you can come after.
And if she loves jeans, useful pockets and a bag with a bit of character, you’ve got a few clues already.
What’s her sort of denim?
Have a little look at what she wears. Does she keep things simple, or enjoy mixing colours and textures? Is she more faded blue jeans, black denim or a bit of both?
I love combining different shades of denim, sometimes with leather or another fabric. Some bags turn out quite calm. Others have a bit more attitude.
The original pockets, worn patches and seams are part of that. I like keeping them where they work with the design. They give me something interesting to play with, and give you something to recognise when choosing a bag for someone.
You might look at one and think, “Yes, that’s very her.”
Is she carrying the essentials… or half the house?
No judgement. Some days, a phone and keys are enough. Other days, apparently we need a notebook, water bottle, charger, snacks and three things we forgot were in there.
A tote could suit someone who likes that extra room. If she carries a laptop, check its measurements against the bag before choosing.
A crossbody is worth a look if she likes her hands free. Think about the strap too: how she wears it, where she likes the bag to sit and whether she needs it adjustable.
For someone who prefers a smaller bag, a shoulder bag or clutch might be closer to her style.
And if choosing her main bag feels a bit too personal, a denim pouch is another option.
Makeup, cables, little bits that otherwise wander around the bottom of her bag — you probably know what she’d put in it.
Have a peek inside
I know, the denim catches your eye first. Mine too.
But when you’re choosing a gift, have a look at the pockets, opening and strap as well. Those are the things she’ll get to know once she starts carrying it.
Has she ever complained that everything disappears into the bottom of her bag? Or that she wishes it had a zip? There’s another clue.
When I’m making a bag, I think about where those smaller things can go and how easy they’ll be to reach. Depending on the design, you’ll find inside pockets, original jeans pockets, extra zip pockets or a double-zip opening.
I also add support inside the fabric to help the bag keep its shape. I like a bit of structure, but I still want it to feel relaxed.
Each bag is different, so check its description and have a look through the photos. Especially the inside ones.
A little of my story goes with it
It’s just me behind Gabus81 — choosing the denim, working out the design and sewing it here in the UK.
I don’t work from a fixed pattern. I start with an idea and adjust things as I go. Sometimes a pocket or a seam in the jeans sends the design in a slightly different direction.
That’s part of what I enjoy about making them. I get to see what those jeans can become.
So if you give one of my bags to someone, you have a little story to tell them too. You can point out the original denim details and say, “This used to be a pair of jeans.”
I still get a kick out of that.
A few things to check before choosing
You don’t need to investigate her entire wardrobe. Her current favourite bag will tell you quite a lot.
Is it large or small?
Does she wear it on her shoulder or across her body?
Does she stick to certain colours?
Does she like plenty of pockets?
Has she mentioned anything that annoys her about it?
Then check the size, closure and strap details of the bag you’re considering. A photo of it being worn helps too — measurements on a screen can be surprisingly hard to picture.
And sometimes there’s no occasion at all. You’ve simply spotted something you think she’d love.
Have a browse through my bags and see if one makes you think of her.

A tote bag can carry almost everything — but that doesn’t automatically make it practical. The right shape, pockets and opening are what stop it from becoming a black hole. So, who is a tote really for, and why has this simple bag style lasted so long?
Why Tote Bags Still Work So Well
A little tote bag history first
One of the best-known tote designs started life in 1944 as an ice carrier. It was made to move blocks of ice from the car to the ice chest.
Not exactly glamorous — but very practical.
And I think that explains why tote bags are still so useful today. Their original job was simple: carry more, stay strong and make everything easy to reach.
Of course, most of us aren’t carrying blocks of ice anymore.
We’re carrying laptops, notebooks, water bottles, shopping, chargers, pouches, snacks and all those things that somehow join us during the day.
Who is a tote bag really for?
A tote works well if you regularly carry more than just the basics. It can move easily between work, shopping, travel and everyday plans without needing a different bag for each one.
It’s also a good choice if you like carrying your bag on your shoulder and want a wide opening that lets you see what’s inside.
But a big bag is only practical when it doesn’t become a black hole.
That’s why pockets matter.
I add inside and outside pockets to help separate the things you reach for most — phone, keys, purse, documents and all the smaller bits that usually disappear at the bottom.
Structure matters too.
I like my tote bags to feel structured but relaxed. Interfacing helps them keep their shape, while the reclaimed denim keeps the softer, worn-in character of the original jeans.
The exact construction changes with each design. Some totes have a double zip, others use a different secure closure, but I always think about access, comfort and how the bag will work when it’s actually being carried.
Is a tote right for everyone?
Probably not.
If you only carry a phone, keys and a small purse, a crossbody or small bag may feel more comfortable. They’re lighter, hands-free and easier when you want to take only the essentials.
But if your days involve carrying a little bit of everything, a tote earns its place.
That’s what I want a Gabus81 tote to be — not simply a large denim bag, but something useful, organised and ready to be properly used.
Prefer something smaller? See Crossbody Bags
Upcycled Denim Bag vs High-Street Bag
For me, the difference is in the details—the reclaimed denim I choose, the way I make each bag and the practical features I add because I know they make a bag easier to use.
What’s the Difference?
I’ve never wanted Gabus81 bags to be different just for the sake of it. I make them differently because I care about what they’re made from, how they work and whether they will be genuinely useful.
A high-street bag can be quick to find, easy to buy and often cheaper—I’m not going to pretend otherwise. But an upcycled denim bag from Gabus81 is created in a completely different way.
So, what are you really choosing between?
1. Denim already here vs new material
I make Gabus81 bags from unwanted jeans and denim offcuts. Instead of producing another new fabric, I work with what already exists—and turn it into something useful again.
2. One bag at a time vs hundreds at once
I don’t have a production line. I cut, sew and finish every bag myself, usually in very small batches. Even when I repeat a design, the denim makes every version look different.
3. Practical first, always
Of course, I want my bags to look good. But pockets, comfortable straps, easy access and enough structure matter just as much. A bag should make your day easier, not only match your outfit.
4. The double zip is there for a reason
My signature double zipper gives you a wide opening, so you can see what’s inside without digging around. You can position the zip comfortably whichever shoulder you carry your bag on. And because many Gabus81 bags have two sides that can be the front, it works from either direction. 😉
5. I don’t hide the denim’s past
Faded patches, original seams and jeans pockets are not flaws I need to cover. They are often the details that give me the idea for the whole bag.
6. Every detail is decided at my sewing table
I choose where the pockets go, which lining works and how the straps should sit. Sometimes I change the plan halfway through because the denim suggests a better solution.
7. Structured, but never stiff
I add internal support so the bag keeps its shape and feels comfortable to use. It still feels like denim—soft, flexible and ready for everyday life.
8. You know who made it
There is no mystery production line behind Gabus81. It is me, my sewing machine and a lot of denim taking over my workspace.
9. Similar doesn’t mean identical
I can make the same style again, but I can’t recreate every fade, seam or pocket placement. The jeans decide part of the final look—and honestly, that is one of my favourite things about upcycling.
10. It depends on what matters to you
If you need something quick, inexpensive and easy to replace, a high-street bag may be the right choice. But if you want a practical upcycled denim bag with strong character and thoughtful details, that is exactly why I make Gabus81 bags.
Not mass-produced. Not perfect in a factory-made way. Just denim given a new purpose—and a bag designed to be properly used.

From the Workshop
From researching vintage Levi's jeans to finishing new upcycled denim bags for Etsy and London—here's what I've been working on over the past few weeks.
What's Been Happening at Gabus81 in June & July
The past few weeks have been a busy mix of everyday life, my full-time job and every spare evening spent in the workshop.
One part of making my upcycled denim bags always starts before I even thread the sewing machine.
I love learning about the jeans I'm about to work with.
This time I discovered that one pair of Levi's dated back to around 2006 and another to 2007. It's amazing to think that after nearly twenty years, they were ready for a completely new chapter.
Those jeans became new bags for my Etsy shop, while the leftover denim from other projects found its way into something different. Combined with black corduroy, it became a small London collection featuring a large tote bag, two crossbody bags and two pouches. I really enjoyed seeing how those saved pieces came together into a collection that feels connected while making the most of every good piece of fabric.
I've also started adding another detail that I think is here to stay. Inside the zipped pocket you'll now often find hidden card slots. They're perfect for a bank card, travel card or another small essential—easy to reach but safely tucked away. Together with my signature double-zip opening, it's another practical feature that makes my handmade bags even more useful for everyday life.
Little by little, every project teaches me something new, and that's how Gabus81 continues to grow.
Thanks for following the journey. I'm really happy you're here.

One Pair of Jeans, Two New Denim Bags
Two new Gabus81 denim bags, made from one pair of jeans — a roomy tote bag and a smaller everyday crossbody bag, both now available on Etsy.
Two new denim bags are now available on Etsy — and both started as the same pair of jeans.
This is one of my favourite parts of working with reclaimed denim. One pair can hold so much potential if you look at it in the right way. The legs, pockets, waistband, seams and little worn-in details can all become something useful again.
This time, one pair of jeans became two completely different bags: a roomy denim tote bag for everyday carrying, and a smaller denim crossbody bag for lighter days when you only want the essentials close.
The tote is made for busy days, shopping, work, travel and all the usual things that somehow end up in one bag. It has that relaxed summer denim look, but still keeps the practical Gabus81 details — structure, useful pockets and an easy-to-use shape.
The smaller bag is more compact, but still full of character. Original jeans pockets, visible seams, mixed denim shades and those little reclaimed details make it feel casual, practical and a bit different without trying too hard.
I love that nothing feels wasted here. The same pair of jeans gave two bags their own personality — same denim story, different purpose.
Both are made by me, one at a time, from reclaimed denim and carefully chosen details. Already available in my Etsy shop.

New Gabus81 Pieces for London
Six fresh Gabus81 pieces are heading to Solo Craft Fair London — two tote bags, two crossbody bags and two cosmetic bags, all made from reclaimed denim.
Fresh denim pieces are on their way to Solo Craft Fair at Elephant Stores in London — my first little website note about Gabus81 bags being available there.
This small new batch includes two tote bags, two crossbody bags and two cosmetic bags, all made from reclaimed denim and carefully chosen fabric details.
I kept this collection quite calm and wearable, with the same Gabus81 idea behind it — useful bags with pockets, structure and a little bit of character. Some pieces are more simple, some have stronger denim details, but they all sit together as one small colour story.
The tote bags are made for everyday carrying, with enough space for real daily use. The crossbody bags are lighter and easier for hands-free days, and the cosmetic bags are perfect for keeping smaller things in one place — in a handbag, suitcase or on a dressing table.
Most of these pieces started from the same group of jeans, which I always love. It means the collection feels connected, but every item is still different in its own way.
Made by me, one at a time, from reclaimed denim and carefully chosen details.

New Denim Tote Bags
Two new reclaimed denim tote bags in my signature Gabus81 shape — practical for everyday carrying, easy to wear, and still a little different.
This tote style has quietly become one of the most loved Gabus81 bag shapes.
I have made a few versions now, and it is the style people seem to reach for again and again — at my Solo Craft Fair display in London, among friends, and even with teenagers who want something practical but still different.
That makes me really happy, because this is exactly what I want Gabus81 bags to be: useful, easy to wear, a little original, and not the same as everything else on the high street.
These two new tote bags are made from reclaimed black denim. They have the same everyday idea behind them — enough space for real life, pockets that actually help, a comfortable shoulder shape, and that relaxed denim look that works with jeans, black layers, boots, trainers or a simple jacket.
One feels a little more rock-edged, the other a little quieter, but both are part of my signature Gabus81 tote style.
Made by me, one at a time, from reclaimed denim and carefully chosen details.

Denim Pouches & Everyday Organisers
For the bits that always fall to the bottom.
I made this small batch for the bits we all carry, but never find when we need them — makeup, cables, travel pieces, lip balm, receipts, or those little everyday extras that always fall to the bottom of the bag.
These pouches are not stiff organisers. They are softer, easier, more natural to use — something you can move from bag to bag without overthinking it.
Each one is made from reclaimed denim and fabric pieces, so every pouch has its own character, colour mix and texture.
Some feel more calm, some have more attitude, but all of them are made to be useful.
Use one inside your tote, crossbody, work bag or travel bag — or keep it close when you only need the small essentials.
Small batch. Each one different. Made to help real life feel a little less messy.
I made these for the everyday bits we all carry — makeup, cables, lip balm, travel pieces and those small things we always seem to need quickly.

A Summer Bag With A Past
Paint marks, worn denim, a second chance — this one was never going to be ordinary.
These jeans had already lived a very busy life, and I knew I did not want to waste them.
They were heavily marked with paint, so instead of hiding that story, I used the inside of the denim and gave them a completely different direction. The result is a lighter, softer look that feels perfect for summer — still full of character, just in a new way.
This bag is easy to wear, practical to use, and made for everyday life. It has outside pockets, inside organisation, a double zip closure, and an adjustable strap finished with a simple knot.
I love that it still feels honest. A little raw, a little relaxed, and far from boring. Just reclaimed denim with another life ahead of it.
Why you’ll love it:
- light denim look with character
- adjustable crossbody strap
- outside pockets for easy access
- inside pockets to keep things organised
- double zip closure
- one of a kind reclaimed denim bag
Take a closer look if you like everyday bags with a story behind them.
A summer crossbody with a past life, practical details,
and the kind of character you cannot fake.

More Than Just a Denim Tote
Some bags come together quietly.
This one had a bit more attitude from the start.
I made this tote from reclaimed denim for someone who wants an everyday bag to feel practical, easy to use, and still a little different from everything else out there.
What I love here is that mix of function and character. The original jeans pockets, the worn denim, the button detail, the raw edges — it all gives this bag that slightly undone, lived-in look I always seem to come back to. Not too polished. Not too safe. Just real denim with personality.
At the same time, I wanted it to be genuinely useful. It has a full zip closure, comfortable shoulder straps, and enough room inside for the things you actually carry through the day — notebook, water bottle, phone, purse, keys, and all those extra bits that somehow always come with you.
There is also inside organisation to make it easier to use, because I know a roomy tote only really works when it does not turn into a mess five minutes later.
This is the kind of bag I make when I want something to feel relaxed, strong, and full of character — something that works hard, but still feels like you chose it for a reason.
Why you’ll love it:
- roomy everyday tote size
- original jeans pockets outside
- full zip closure on top
- inside organisation for essentials
- comfortable shoulder straps
- one of a kind denim design
Made from reclaimed denim and carefully chosen fabrics.
Designed and handmade by me, in the UK.

Denim Crossbody with Pockets
I made this denim crossbody bag for everyday days when you just want everything in one place — simple, practical, and easy to carry.
This one started with a pair of jeans I couldn’t ignore — the pocket was just too good to waste. I kept it exactly as it is, because nothing works better than a real jeans pocket.
I added a soft corduroy side for contrast and shape, and a full zip opening so you can actually see everything inside (no digging around).
It holds its shape, but still feels relaxed — not stiff, not bulky. Just easy to use.
Inside, there’s space for real life: your phone, small notebook, water bottle, everyday bits — all organised and easy to reach.
This is the kind of bag you just grab and go.
Hands free, practical, with character.
Why you’ll love it:
– real jeans pocket outside (quick access)
– extra zipped pocket on the back
– full zip opening for easy access
– structured but relaxed shape
– comfortable crossbody strap
– one of a kind — exactly as in the photos
Made from rescued denim and carefully selected fabrics.
Designed and handmade by me, in the UK.

Red Denim & Corduroy Tote
This one came out with a bit more attitude.
I’ve just finished this blue denim and red corduroy tote — bold, slightly raw, and full of character. The kind of piece that doesn’t try too hard, but still stands out.
The red is deep and strong (and honestly… never easy to photograph properly), but in real life it has that rich tone I always look for when I mix fabrics.
Inside, it’s built with structure to hold its shape, but I never aim for stiffness — I prefer that relaxed feel when the bag is worn and used. That balance is always part of the design.
Finished with a double zip, practical pockets and my signature details — small things that make each piece feel complete.
Only one like this.

My Denim Bag Care Guide
I’ve just added my first digital product to Etsy — a Denim Bag Care Guide created to sit naturally alongside my handmade bags.
Because I work with upcycled denim and create pieces made to be used and loved, I wanted to offer something extra — a simple guide to help you care for your bag and keep it looking good for longer.
This guide is designed especially for upcycled denim bags and everyday use, making it easy to keep your bag in great condition over time.
It’s practical, easy to follow, and made for anyone who wants their denim bag to last, not just look good for a moment.

Upcycled Denim Leather Large Tote Bag, Double Zipper, Pockets, Detachable Crossbody Strap
A new denim and leather tote has just landed in my shop — the kind of bag I love making because it’s built for real life, not just for photos.
This one started as a pair of rescued blue jeans, full of natural character, and a bundle of leather offcuts I couldn’t bear to waste. I flipped the leather to the soft side for that suede-look feel, which gives the bag a slightly quiet-luxe finish while still keeping that rugged denim soul.
What I’m most proud of here is the function. I used the original jeans back pocket on the outside (because it’s honestly the best quick-access pocket ever), added a zipped outer pocket, and inside I built the kind of organisation I always want in my own bags: useful open pockets for your phone and essentials, plus a zipped pocket for the important bits.
The top closes with a double zipper, so it opens wide when you need it (hello, easy packing) but closes securely when you’re on the move. I also added interfacing for structure, so it holds its shape beautifully without feeling stiff.
You can carry it on the long handles for an easy shoulder bag, or clip on the detachable, adjustable strap when you want to go hands-free — perfect for busy days, commuting, markets, or travel.
If you’re the kind of person who loves a tote that actually keeps you organised (and looks even better with wear), this one is for you. And as always with Gabus81 — it’s one of a kind, made slowly and carefully in my little workspace.
24/02/2026
This blue and black drop is such a “me” collection.
I love denim that already has a story, and these three bags came together from rescued jeans and carefully chosen linings,
stitched slowly in my little Gabus81 workspace.
In this mini collection you’ll find a hands-free denim crossbody, a zipped clutch bag, and a roomy denim tote — all handmade in the UK.
I build each one with interfacing for structure (so it keeps its shape),
secure zips (so your essentials stay safe),
and a fully lined inside with pockets (so you can actually stay organised).
If you’re looking for a one of a kind denim bag
that’s practical for everyday life — commuting, weekends, travel, coffee runs — this is for you.
And because every piece is upcycled,
there won’t be identical copies once they sell.
